The government will again invoke the Internal Security Act if the situation looks likely to turn violent during the planned rally of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) next month, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said on Tuesday.
Mr Suthep, who is in charge of security affairs, was responding to the UDD's promise of a protracted rally in November to oust the government and force a general election.
"The government will have to impose the ISA if the rally is really aimed at toppling the administration and seizing important government offices. I am duty-bound to prevent people from breaking the law and destroying the peace," he said.
Mr Suthep called for the UDD and the Puea Thai Party to fight through channels provided by constitution. The use of violence would not lead to victory, only defeat for the people and the country.
The government has this year already imposed the ISA in Bangkok's Dusit district on three occasions to cope with UDD rallies.
