Suthep: ISA to be used against UDD

The government will again invoke the Internal Security Act if the situation looks likely to turn violent during the planned rally of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) next month, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said on Tuesday.

Mr Suthep, who is in charge of security affairs, was responding to the UDD's promise of a protracted rally in November to oust the government and force a general election.

"The government will have to impose the ISA if the rally is really aimed at toppling the administration and seizing  important government offices.  I am duty-bound to prevent people from breaking the law and destroying the peace," he said.

Mr Suthep called for the UDD and the Puea Thai Party to fight through channels provided by constitution. The use of violence would not lead to victory, only defeat for the people and the country.

The government has this year already imposed the ISA in Bangkok's Dusit district on three occasions to cope with  UDD rallies.

I agree with most of what everyone has said and I'll add a bit to backus' last post. ISA is also used because it gives the enforcers involved immunity to prosecution in the event something like Oct 7 happens under the Democrat watch.

It seems the general consensus of these comments are not in favour of imposing security arrangements as if there is a major revolutionary event occurring.

However, it is also clear that this is the very intent of ISA imposition. To create the impression of out-of-control revolutionary activity, when it is just the 'opposition' to the Government expressing themselves in lieu of other outlets....such as an election that frightens them almost as much as their nemesis Thaksin.

As an aside, nice to see some tolerance by BKK Post of alternative POV on this board, unlike the rigidly enforced uniformity by another Farang board. It is amazing how Farangs will contribute to, and participate in the heavily censored TV discussions, lending credibility to such censorship.

All yes, i agree with all the posted comment. why must ISA was imposed on all UDD gathering and where else was not on PAD which is more violence then UDD?
what a double standand action GOVERNMENT?
What will it happen if the last topple Government impose this act to the PAD, will you denied or protect the ISA act?
Or you will just say the past Government was stupic and do not know how to impose this Act when they will fighting for the people rights?
Be fair to everybody which they think of making Thailand back the 'Land of Smile' which is well known to the World.
I did not say that i was on whos or which side party, i only wanted to have a peaceful and properous life that we enjoy in past as all Thai's do.
Stop all this ACT and look for way to resolve the difference in Politic and bring us the glory days of Thailand back to us.

Please stop invoking the ISA. You are killing the service and MICE industry. Businessmen and high-end tourists will not come to Thailand when the ISA is invoked.

Insurance doesn't cover the people who visit Thailand when such emergency acts are imposed. No one want to risk coming to Thailand when not covered by insurance.

The tourism and MICE industry is already experiencing the worst downturn in recent times so please consider and stop turning Thailand into a police state and playing into the hands of the red-shitrs UDD, the yellow shirts, the so-called Muslim secessionists and also the train drivers.

I personally agree with the government to impose ISA for any threat that may cause to national security. National security must be the first priority to ensure public safety. Whatever protest it must be carried out and follow the rules of law, otherwise Thailand will be a mess and law cannot give justice, then the painful and losses will hit Thailand itself...nobody will win in this case but as a government it has duty to ensure this strictly, no negotiation should be entertain with regards to national security and interest !!!!

UDD if become a government one day let say....will act the same and do they want and allow other to protest like what they did now...??? Think about it !

A more descriptive headline would be

"SUTHEP: ISA TO BE USED AGAINST UDD AND THAILAND"

Considering that the UDD is overwhelmingly the electoral majority in Thailand, such a headline would not be far off the mark.

Whenever Suthep and friends threaten the UDD like this, it is another "shovel of dirt digging their electoral grave".

A huge swath of the Thai electorate is affronted everytime this happens. It keeps imputing ill-intent. These chickens will come home to roost at election time.

Where do all these UDD people get the time to hang out at rallies. Are they retired, housewives, unemployed, ----
What a waste of the country's resources to have to manage their behavior. Wouldn't it be more productive to do community service and be useful, instead of being annoying? How about 5000 UDD cleaning up slum areas, another 5000 planting national forests, 5000 dredging the klongs and cleaning roadsides. {-:] There is no law against being useful to one's country!

Yeah, OK. That is Suthep's POV.

Now what about the UDD? What are their plans and objectives?

"Suthep called for the UDD and Puea Thai party to fight through channels provided by the constitution".......Yeah OK, an election! Simple. Would solve everything as long as it was supervised and endorsed by foreign electoral professionals.

Would take care of all the reconciliation stuff they talk about. But that is all it is by Suthep and friends....just insincere talk.

I am duty-bound to prevent people from breaking the law and destroying the peace," he said.

And can you please tell us, why you don't use the same tactics with the Yellow shirts???

1 question and I hope other posters can answer. Why doesn't this government use the ISA against any PAD protests? The PAD's last rally was violent against their own people by the Cambodian border. Plus didn't the government thank the UDD for their last 2 rallies being peaceful. Double standards being used here?
