Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon and Army Chief Anupong Paojinda on Monday said the military were not involved in any way with an explosion at the People's Alliance for Democracy's rally at Sanam Luang on Sunday night.

The explosion took place at about 9pm, injuring 12 people.

Gen Prawit and Gen Anupong said this when asked to comment on the incident.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said he assigned acting police chief Pateep Tanprasert to investigate the incident.

Pol Gen Pateep said investigation had been under way. Police would find out if there were any CCTV cameras in the area recording the explosion.

He said the incident took place despite the fact that sufficient police were deployed to maintain law and order.

Davey boy, do you live under a rock? ISA is to prevent the protesters from turning violent, like during the Red Shirted riot back in April where they tried to literally burn the city down and called for armed insurrection.

PAD's not violently protesting just because someone throws a grenade at them! Put the beer down and clear the cobwebs out son!

Show the difference between Red and Yellow. The Reds have very rarely come under attack by the yellows..however it has been common for the reds and their backers to kill and maim the yellowshirts...A good reason why they should not be able to choose another PM... Democracy doesn't work in coountries where the populace is not educated.

Last time I checked, you could not just go down to the corner 7-11 and buy a real version of an M-79 grenade launcher and live grenades. It's a military weapon. Somewhere, somehow this weapon started out in the hands of a military person.

Of course I only know what the media says, and it did not have to be Thai military, but military weapons come from the military or alleged weapons dealers like the non-extraditable Russian the US wanted from the Thai government.

David Brown, you really are amazing! - someone throws a hand grenade at the people ( not just "Yellow Shirts" ) and you manage to completely turn it around and make out like they brought it on themselves - talk about your spin doctors! That's pretty low!

interesting that the Generals assume that people think they might have been involved... were they horrified or disappointed? no, just claiming they didnt do it!

meanwhile, as it seems the PAD rallies are more dangerous for innocent people I wonder if the government realise that they should invoke the ISA for PAD rallies instead of the redshirt rallies where people are not armed and seem to be quite peaceful?

I would very much like to ask these two individuals,Defence Minister Profit Wongsuwon and Army Chief Anpong Paojinda if a denial of a criminal act such as attempted murder against innocent women and children is a admission of guilt. Let us step back in time and look at the facts of two very similar instances. In the first instance on October 7th 2008 a similar act occurred during a peaceful demonstration by supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy's rally but was far more devastating in that deaths were caused and many citizens received very serious life threatening injuries. Investigations were carried out but no criminal actions were actioned against the perpetrators of these heinous crimes. An independent investigator stated that there had been serious interfererence by senior military and police personal in preventing and withholding evidence so because of lack of evidence, (incompetence and corruption) the case was dropped.
Similarly in the case of attempted murder on one of the co- leaders of the People’s Alliance for Democracy's Sondhi Limpthongkul in broad daylight on the streets of Bangkok. In this instance a total of some 86 bullets from M.K. rifles littered the scene and maybe some hand grenades. It seemed that very extensive forensic tests were carried out but again no criminal charges were brought because of lack of evidence as stated in statement above.
With regard to the present case of attempted murder of innocent Thai citizens women and children numerous reports state that the weapons used were hand grenades or firecrackers.
I fail to comprehend that a fire cracker could cause such life threatening damage. When are these newspapers going to get some factual facts instead of stating derogatory statements?
In the case of the October 7th terrorist act most of the casualties received life threatening injuries caused by Chinese hand grenades which were inferior in quality and in fact were banned by the United Nations because of the explosive charges contained within them.
When is the Abhisit government going to route out these rogue elements within the military and the police force and start naming names?.
All this has done is put another nail in the coffin of the tourist trade in Thailand. Bad news travels fast in the world wide media organisations where the internet is used.
