Thaksin hopes snaps dispel ill-health talk

Photos of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra taken with former South African president Nelson Mandela and former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela have been released to quash rumours about his ill-health.

Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra appears with former South African president Nelson Mandela in a photograph supplied to the media yesterday by Noppadon Pattama, Thaksin’s spokesman, in a move seen as an attempt to quash rumours about Thaksin’s ill-health.

Thaksin's spokesman, Noppadon Pattama, circulated the pictures yesterday while giving an interview about the former prime minister who is believed to be staying in Brunei.

So for all those photoshop experts and know-it-all-betters:

    News24 and AP
Cape Town - The Nelson Mandela Foundation on Thursday confirmed that fugitive former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was with Nelson Mandela last Friday.

"He did see Mr Mandela," the foundation's spokesperson Sello Hatang told News24.

"It was a courtesy call, no business was discussed," he said.

According to a newspaper interview, Thaksin was also "in Africa for diamond mining".

Faked or not, the photo represents an interesting contrast. True, it shows two former heads of state, and that is their only common attribute.

Simply put, of the two which one :

Is loved, and admired by the vast majority of his people.
Oversaw the process of political, social, tribal and racial reconciliation in his country.
Is universally regarded as promoter of peace, human rights, social justice and the democratic process.
Was persecuted, tortured and jailed because of his beliefs.
Produced an autobiography that sold six million copies.
Is not, nor never was a billionaire, yet diverts the majority of his income to charity.

I leave it up to others to decide between the two.

The problem is that Mr Mandela didn't deny has taken a photo with Thaksin and didn't complain that his image was used by a 'terrorits".

The only people who claim that this picture is a fake are the same people who were saying that Thaksin was ousted from Dubai a few months ago... Before he called from Dubai to say everything is ok.

But it is a fact that for the army coup makers enthusiasts it is very embarrassing to see Thaksin, a supposed "terrorists", with a man rewarded by Peace Noble Prize

look at Thaksin's right hand side (left as we look at it) The cut and contrast between his suit and the cabinet (esp near the bottom) is quite subtantial/sharp, plus the depth/perspective between the 2 men is slightly out.
Still it keeps us all talking about him, doesn't it? :(

Why not shake the hand of the democratically elected leader of a country, do you think it would be more fitting for Mandela to shake the hand of a PM, who is the PM simply because the military, with the backing of a few wealthy megalomaniacs put him there?

I went to Mandela's web site.

Mandela never met Thaksin in his whole long life.

I suggest we stop hurling insults at Mandela. I don't see any good hounding Thaksin as well. Instead of building relationships we are giving a poor image to others in view of the circumstances of how Thaksin was deposed and how this government came to power.

Look at the photo image of Mandela at www.iart.co.za. If you had no doubts before, you will now. This is either a Mandela lookalike or a photo of a younger mandela with someone. he is too young in the BP photo.
