The Central Islamic Committee has voted to remove its secretary-general from office.
Pichet Sathirachawal yesterday linked his removal to his recent campaign against the promotion of Pol Lt Gen Somkid Boonthanom to assistant police national chief. Pol Lt Gen Somkid faces a criminal charge in connection with the disappearance of a Saudi businessman two decades ago.
It was feared the officer's promotion would further damage ties between Thailand and Saudi Arabia, and delay the issue of visas for Thai pilgrims hoping to go on the haj to Mecca, sparking speculation the two issues were becoming intertwined.
