Surapong: Thaksin's passport ban lifted

Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul has admitted that has overturned an order issued by the Abhisit Vejjajiva government revoking the passport of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, Mr Surapong said he had ordered the lifting of the revocation after the Consular Affairs Department sent a letter to him through the permanent secretary advising that Thaksin had applied with the Thai ambassador to Abu Dhabi for an ordinary passport.

The Consular Affairs Department sought his advice because Thaksin's passport had been revoked on April 12  by then foreign minister Kasit Piromya under item 23 (7) of the Foreign Affairs Ministry's regulations.

D23: Khun koolbreez, A Thai Ambassador is in a political post and is the direct representative of the head of the Thai government. You should be able to answer your question, "why the Thai Ambassador to the UAE did not arrest the former PM", from that fact

Mrscersai... In which country does popularity replace justice?

Everyone (even the Red Shirts) knows he is guilty. But because they like him, they believe he shouldn't face punishment.
What kind of skewed logic is this? You all say corruption is bringing down Thailand, but you don't want to start fighting it with Thaksin, who is arguably the biggest crook the country has ever seen.
    Anyone care to explain why?

A better question would be why the Thai Ambassabor in Dubai did not arrest Thaksin? It is his duty to arrest criminals of Thailand, and anything less is negligence, and he is criminally liable.

Thaksin, if you come back and fight your case you will be a hero/saviour of Thailand from this futile struggle now that (true)justice has prevailed against extra-judicial powers.

Seems Mr. Surapong’s priorities as the Foreign Minister is not to represent Thailand in affairs with foreign countries but to represent the desires of but one Thai who fled to a foreign country.

Wow there are some people here who just haven't been keeping up with the news...
    1) Thaksin was found guilty while his brother-in-law was PM, not the Dems.
    2) He isn't seeking a retrial because he accepts his guilt. He is seeking amnesty.
    3) Samak lost his job for perjury and breaking parliamentary rules for receiving 80,000 baht a month from a private company while PM - not for cooking.
    4) Thaksin still faces numerous other charges. A fair trial would undoubtedly see him sentenced to more time.
    5) Why start with PAD leaders? Thaksin's crimes were committed first.

disc 14, then you can't stand the democrats and PAD as well, right? Because I can't stand them because they are traitors for this nation.

    @ Discussion 11 (crunchy):

Mr. Jacques Chirac, the former French president, is not in prison.

    He got a suspended sentence.

Happy not to be Thai. It is just going one way with this country....down.
Nobody care if you are criminal or not.
The Yingluck administration only got one aim, bringing the criminal TS back as soon as possible.
