Thailand must invest 2.27 trillion baht in new infrastructure over the next 10 years, including new inter-city road links, high-speed train networks and urban mass transit systems, a government committee in charge of future development strategy says.
The committee, known as the Strategic Committee for Reconstruction and Future Development (SCRF), yesterday approved five strategic investment plans covering water resource management, boosting economic competitiveness, developing new industries and economic sectors, strengthening the country's insurance sector and infrastructure development.
The SCRF, chaired by Virabongsa Ramangkura, will submit the plans for cabinet review on Tuesday.

'Govt given roadmap to ensure Thai prosperity' Ok, let's see... 2.27 TRILLION for this grand scam. So, 20-30% off the top to grease the politicians, that comes to 454 to 681 BILLION baht to spead around over a ten year period, or approximately 55 odd BILLION per year. Yup, that will definately ensure prosperiry, for some Thais, at least. Not so sure about the common folk. Assuming any of this actually gets built, it will mean an uncaring government will inflict misery on those who might be in the way (live on land where the new roads etc are to be built) and massive inconvenience for those that live nearby.

We built more roads already .Look to cities bigger than Bangkok and you will see they have extensive train systems already .We dont .If education was reformed and all schools could offer decent education parents also wouldnt be forced to drive their children all over town to look for a good school cutting down on traffic .There needs to be a shift in thinking that public transit is self sufficient and cool as well as environmentally more friendly than standing in car exhaust all day .

Sounds like the "more of everything, then nobody can blame you for having done nothing". But it doesn't work. More roads, more trains, better public transport, more canals, more water catching areas (where you still have people living in and getting flooded). If the policiy is to shift traffic from roads to rail and you do more trains, then you don't need to do more roads. If the policy is to prevent the country from flooding, then you only need a giant canal (the water highway as somebody once suggested)where the water can go. Spreading the budget allover on doing a bit of everything will just result in having done a little bit everywhere but with no substantial effect.

More raods that are secure from flooding.... means more raods on high level. Wasn't it those roades who blocked the water from flowing to the point that some engineers recommended to cut breaches into them (which did not work as well)? They really seem to have learnt a lot during the flooding. There are enough roads to get around. Just manage the water to keep it away from the roads and all other areas where we don't want it to be.

Not to worry about more roads or other grand projects as once everyone takes their share we will be lucky to see even potholes filled in. In Nonthaburi still the streets in my area still not cleaned except for what the residents did sweeping the street to the end of the sois waiting for the debris to be collected.

Looks like Thaksin hit the Jackpot on this one, and I thought the Airport construction and the CT bomb scanners scheme was genius. I was wrong, this one is the mother load!

All the infrastructure building is only part of the solution. More should be done to improve the traffic flow which are impeded by lax traffic enforcement, proliferation of private vans and Tuk tuks which jam the roads and vendors spilling on to the roads. A good public bus system which can service routes efficiently will bring an end to the vans and restrict the Tuk tuks to certain area like in Jakarta. The vendors and hawkers should be re-located to designated areas with better control over safety and health and can be better manage like in Singapore. All needed is the political.

Investment in infrastructure is needed but all I have seen this government do is really badly mismanage a flood while the proxy leader dodges questions and the real leader hides in Dubai .I dont think I want Thailands infrastructure projects built by these guys .The money wasted will be worse than the airport which had to be down sized due to corruption .
