The cabinet on Tuesday approved in principle a fund of two billion baht for reparations to victims of violent clashes in political conflicts as proposed by the Truth for Reconciliation Commission (TRC), government spokeswoman Thitima Chaisaeng said.

Ms Thitima said the reparations would cover damaged parties of all sides in political conflicts in violent incidents which took place from before the Sept 19, 2006 coup and up to and including the street protests in April-May 2010.

She said the amounts of compensation set were 4.5 million baht for each death, 2.5 million baht for a funeral, 4.5 million baht each for the disabled, 3.6 million baht each for loss of important organs, 1.8 million baht each for loss of unimportant organs, 1.125 million baht each for those seriously wounded, 675,000 baht each for those not seriously wounded, and 225,000 baht each for those who sufferred minor injuries.

Those who died or became disabled or lost important organs after receiving medical treatment would be entifled to be compensated for actual medical expenses but not more than 200,000 baht.

Those who lost unimportant organs after receiving treatment would be compensated for actual medical expenses but not more than 100,000 baht.

Those who were seriously wounded and required continuous treatment would be entitled to be compensated for actual medical expenses or not more than 50,000 baht per year.

Reparations for serious mental losses in cases of death or disability would be three million baht each.

Those jailed for longer than 180 days before receiving a court verdict or being acquitted would be entitled to get 1.5 million baht each and between 90 to 180 days 750,000 baht each.

Those handed down a jail sentence but the actual detention period exceeded the jail term by more than 180 days would get one million baht each, and between 90 to 180 more days 500,000 baht each.
