Movement is 'trying to topple monarchy'

An organised movement in the country is trying to overthrow the monarchy, says a former secretary-general of the National Security Council.

Thawil Pliensri made the claim Wednesday during three hours of testimony to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) about a chart (see below), drawn up by state agencies, which purportedly shows how the movement works.

Mr Thawil later said the DSI wanted to know who exactly was responsible for the chart naming people said to be involved in the anti-monarchy movement. The chart was presented to the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES), set up to deal with the red shirt protests in 2010.

He told them many state agencies had helped create the chart and there was evidence and witnesses to prove some of those mentioned had broken the law and offended the monarchy.

Some have been prosecuted and some have escaped, he said.

But some people included in the chart were not proven to be wrongdoers.

Mr Thawil said offences against the royal institution were numerous and conducted through many channels in such a way that it could be assumed there was an organised anti-monarchy movement.

DSI deputy director-general Prawet Mulpramuk said Mr Thawil's testimony was similar to that of CRES spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd.

He said the DSI would wait for a week for more information from Mr Thawil.

If it does not receive it, former deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban will be summoned for questioning.

Pol Col Prawet said that without information concerning those who created the chart, the DSI could not proceed with its inquiries.

Meanwhile, staff from the DSI and the Office of the Attorney-General will travel to the US to question more witnesses. However, their departure has been postponed from Sunday while they wait for the US to grant them visas.

This chart was issued by peace-keeping authorities in April 2010, and supposedly shows an anti-monarchy conspiracy.
