Poll: Charter change may spur conflict

Constitutional amendment is one of the five major political issues which could lead to an escalation of conflict among the people, an Abac Poll revealed on Sunday.

The poll was conducted on 2,153 people between Jan 15-21 in 17 provinces: Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Samut Prakan, Chon Buri, Nan, Phitsanulok, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Sawan, Nong Khai, Chaiyaphum, Si Sa Ket, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Songkhla.

Asked what they thought could lead to an escalation of conflict among the people, 54.5 per cent pointed to charter amendment; 51.9 per cent to amendment of laws governing the country's main institutions; 49.6 per cent to acts of nepotism among politicians and relatives of people in the government; 37.7 per cent to comparison between compensation for victims of political violence and for soldiers and police killed and wounded in the southern violence; and 34.1 per cent to appointment of individuals with tarnished images to the cabinet.

Asked about the government's achievements during the past six months, 76.3 per cent said the government's work on drug suppression was the most obvious.

However, most, or 80.1 per cent, of the respondents said they had not noted concrete government achievements in tackling problems over the economy, cost of living and fuel prices.

The majority, or 75.2 per cent, also said the government had not achieved anything of note in solving conflicts among the people.

On the possibility of the military seizing power again, 81.7 per cent were opposed to further coups, while 18.3 per cent said otherwise.

However, 52.7 per cent said they would not come out to oppose a coup if there was one, 21.1 per cent said they would oppose it, while 26.2 per cent had no comment.
