Bangkok canals all dredged by May

The Drainage and Sewerage Department has been ordered to complete the dredging of all canals in Bangkok by the end of May, Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said on Monday.

He said the department orginally planned to complete dredging all canals between June and August, but he wanted the work to be done more quickly to cope with the large amount of water expected to reach Bangkok earlier this year.

The department must also make sure its work does not duplicate that of the army, which has been assigned to help the BMA clean up canals.

There should be a regular maintenance schedule for these city assets, including at least annual maintenance dredging where required, and regular weekly/monthly cleanups - of the entire network. That is what would be expected of any responsible entity owning such assets on behalf of taxpayers.

This could be further advanced by spending some time and resources to develop and indirectly reward community based groups who contribute to keeping the klongs clean.

All backed up by enforcement of laws regarding pollution of waterways. It really isn't difficult, but, sadly, there goes a pig flying past my window.

How about dredging on a regular basis along with trash removal and heavy fines for people that dump in to canals .

What water, does he know something the public should know, but nobody dares to talk about? There was no significant rain over the last 3 months, - or is it just the usual, say something as he is a pu yai, whereby he does not know what he is talking about…..

A positive step by the Bangkok governor. Surprising he took so long to do it, but welcome neverthless.
