A group of red-shirts from the northern provinces of Chiang Mai and Lamphun on Wednesday submitted a draft constitutional amendment bill to House Deputy Speaker Charoen Chankomol.
The draft, signed by 60,000 eligible voters, proposes the amendment of Section 291 of the 2007 Constitution to make way for the establishment of a constitution drafting assembly (CDA).
The group was led by Pheu Thai MP for Lamphum Sanguan Pongmanee.

Discussion 1 : moruya "So lawmaking isn't restricted to the lawmakers - anyone can have a go?" Hi Moruya, "Yep!" It's been that way in the States for a l-o-n-g time: People's referendums are a common part of grass roots democracy covering initiatives, laws & re-calls of elected officials. It's Real Democracy, the kind that Thailand needs & doubtful that it can get under a Charter created after a coup by those who overthrew the elected government. Opinions vary; "facts" don't.

Discussion 8 : Even if you accept (and this is not the case of many people) that coups are justifiable, there is a BIG difference between ousting Thaksin and between making a military coup, then change the constitution to give back the power to yourself, the military ! Then making a "referundum" where people have the choice between stay under military rules or accept this constitution ! The ones who changed the constitution to fit their own interests are not PT and the red shirts !! And those people that you call " dictatorial terrorists" and so on are just asking the situation back to normal : the constitution prior to the coup who was celebrated worldwide as the most democratic in South-East Asia !!

FMA The military wouldnt have had to if Thaksin hadn broken the law and paid tax on the sale of his company .Did you notice the coup happened around the same time ? Did you think he would take himself to court with all his yes men clapping with approval ? Thailand is bigger than PT Thaksin and his sidekicks and so is the constitution but when people exploit their position and the courts and people in power wont up hold the law then thank you Army for doing the right thing .

"The constitution is to protect Thailand not give amnesty to corrupt politicians" And by 'Thailand' you mean....? Is it the piece of land? Is it the people that RULE the land? Is it an abstract image of 'thainess'? ...or something else...? Obviously it is not all the PEOPLE of Thailand, since the military is free to overrule any constitution whenever they feel the urge to do so.

The Defense Council Act is in contradiction with all elementaries democratic rules. Thanks that in this country there are people to ask that things change and give back power to the civilians. And discussion 1, in this case the constitution has not been made by lawmakers but by coup makers. And the choice given to the voters was not democratic : accept this constitution or stay under military rules under indeterminate time.
