Dems mourn ‘thank you’ party

Some Democrats on Friday wore black to condemn the government for staging a party to thank staff of the Flood Relief Operations Command and others who battled last year's disaster.

Democrat Party spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut said the government spent 10 million baht on the event, even though official reports showed that  1,264,446 flood-hit families still have not received the 5,000 baht assistance promised.

He said the timing of the event was very poor given that so many people were still suffering the consequences of the floods. He urged Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and others in the government to take his critique into consideration.

bangkokbob D18 - "First, the dinner was in March, when there were no floods."
The article says 'Published: 9/03/2011'. That means September 3rd, 2011. The floods started in June of 2011.

"They did not spend 750 million baht of tax payer's money on a party."
    I never said they did.

@Med142: Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. It is good to see that at least some people who supported the Shinawatra clan are learning that maybe they voted for the wrong party.
Hopefully there are also lots of red-shirt supporters up-country who ask themselves is this is the government they wanted and that represents them? Maybe the BP should go there and interview a couple of people if they think the 10,000,000B was wisely spent.

    @Manny: great comments!

@D20 Bula: The date on the story is March 2011. The floods that wrecked northern and central Thailand started after tropical storms in June and July. Anyone can look that up and see. If you are lying about the flooding and the party, then why should anyone believe you when you claim the Democrats "forced people" to attend or donate to them? Where is your evidence? Where is your proof? You don't have any. In any case, raking in 750 million baht from donations at a party is not the same thing as throwing a 750 million baht party. So when johninbkk says they Democrats threw a 750 million baht party, he's lying. Anyone who reads the story can see that.

The event was held during the time when Thais were experiencing flood. B750M was raised for the DEM from various individuals and state enterprises and government agencies had forced people and companies to pay for 10 to 20 dinner tables each. The DEM also used the occasion for election campaigning.

Last year during palm oil crisis when people were nearly killing each others for a bottle of palm oil, the Democrat government threw a 2-million-baht-a-table fund raising party dinner. And as if that was not insensitive enough, the event was broadcast live on Channel 11. Why?

The fund raising party last year hurt the feelings of a lot of people. That evening while they were eating fancy dinner, I was having poached eggs (sold by weight) for supper, because I couldn’t afford palm oil. I hate poached eggs, but it was cheaper to poach than to boil, you know.

Dear Abhisit, the more you talk the more you expose your own boo boo.

@D15: You said "the Democrats held a 750 million baht banquet *during* the floods," and provided a link. I clicked on the link and read the story. The Democrats did NOT hold a 750 million baht dinner during the floods. First, the dinner was in March, when there were no floods. Second, it was a fund raising dinner that raised 750 million baht. They did not spend 750 million baht of tax payer's money on a party. If you are going to tell lies, it would be smarter not to post a link to evidence that proves you're lying.

The DP is suffering from insignificance at the moment and they know it. They are now a party without power, without purpose, without an agenda, and with nothing to say and have fallen out of the news. That is not a good position to be in when you are in politics. So therefore they need to do things and say things to stay in the news. It does not much matter what you do or say as long as it is critical of your political opponent. When the opponent (PT) controls the news and message then they control the press and they can gain momentum. So this lame attempt by the DP to criticize is political in nature and naturally rings a little bit hollow.

'He said the timing of the event was very poor given that so many people were still suffering the consequences of the floods.'

Poor ? It was unbelievably insensitive. Better no party and the money used to help those who suffered and are still suffering.

Insensitive? The Dems held a 750 million banquet *during* the floods: http://www.bangkokpost.com/lite/topstories/225617/democrat-dinner-raises-b750m. AV even vacationed in the Maldives during the 2011 flooding.

Yes, Bula #13, they're so patient and understanding. This is exactly the reason protests and road blocking continue in various areas north of Bangkok. All along I had thought they were blocking the roads and protesting the fact they hadn't gotten a single baht or any assistance from the government. I was wrong. They've been blocking the roads to hail the government success and support, and what I thought were protests are now actually block parties in celebration for receiving nothing. Thanks for the clarification.
