PAD, senators oppose charter change

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and a group of about 50 senators on Wednesday announced their opposition to the ongoing move by the government to amend Article 291 of the constitution to make way for the setting up of a new body to rewrite the "whole charter".

Panthep Puapongpan, the PAD spokesman, read a statement announcing the alliance after a meeting of its core members.

The statement said the charter amendment proposals to be deliberated in a joint siitting of parliament on Thursday and Friday were clearly intended to rewrite the entire constitution because most of the members of the constitution drafting assembly (CDA) that would be set up were certain to represent the government.

I understand why the 50 unelected Senators are opposed to a change, they are going to lose their status and job. PAD are opposed because that was the provision, unelected Senators, that they got put into the 2007 constitution.

Disc 1 - "this would mean that they control all the armed personnel in the country from police to army, navy, and airforce", just like the governments of the UK, US, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, Italy, Spain, Israel, Russia, China, Korea, Japan, Viet Nam, India - to name just a few.

You never oppose to any change if it is your favor. Now, it's time for the winner to win. If the change is not for country, the Thais have the real right to re-elect the leader in the next election time.

Charter has to be changed for the greater good. DEM oppose charter change to protect the coup makers. PT want the charter change to wash Thaksin of his crimes and consolidate power which will make them invincible. PT's agenda is very worrying as the only powerful department not under their control is the military. Hence if they do get to appoint their own, this would mean that they control all the armed personnel in the country from police to army, navy, and airforce. It will be an iron fist rule where they will be untouchable.

Both old and new charter needs changing.
