Thaksin eyes a third way home

ANALYSIS: Ex-premier could return this year if he plays his cards right, and he may have an ace ready

Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra told his red shirt supporters over the Songkran holidays that this year might be the right time for him to return home.

But what he didn't tell them is exactly how he would do it.

Prinya Tevanaruemitrkul, deputy rector of Thammasat University and a law lecturer, believes there are at least three means the ousted premier could employ to expedite his way back to Thailand.

Might be the right time for him, not necessarily for anyone else.

'...Thaksin seeking a royal pardon for the two-year jail term he received in the Ratchadapisek land case'.

Non starter. To gain a pardon the person has to admit to the crime and show remorse. Neither of which are likely from Thaksin. Even if he owned up and said sorry and was pardoned he would have to face the other charges still. This is why he needs a whitewash total amnesty.

Khun Spiceman #11 People were arrested for the 2010 protests. Some are still in jail. In any civilized country if someone put a mob together and tried to take over the capital city's airports they would be arrested. I keep hearing the phrase "rule of law." Sounds nice but in Thailand, people aren't really ruled by law. They're ruled by the will of certain people.

Discussion 10 dao: Obviously 'everyone else' doesn't include the Democrat Party (case filed too late); Sothi (out on bail again), the PAD (endlessly deferred); the guy who drove his Benz into a bus queue etc...

Who does 'everyone' comprise in your terminology?

Khun Ringmaster #7, forgetting about taking over an airport, what's about burning down a shopping mall, various city halls, and raining down M-79s on innocent bystanders? The only way TS can return to Thailand, is by humbling himself before the Law, and be subjected to it. If he demands the Law to bow down to his will, instead of the other way around, it will never happen, as half of the country will not share the country with him at any price.

"While you continue to address Thaksin as ousted prime minister not convicted fugitive this issues will never get faced."

    Why not... what came first?!?

He would not be a fugitive if he wasn't ousted by a military coup (an illegal act).

Ringmaster dis#7, the reason why most countries have no respect for the ASC or AEC ruling is that it's was a coup formed commitee with a singular purpose. It was based much on political expediency rather than prescribed methods. The defense has presented to the commitee that Taksin wealth was earned before he was elected. I has no sympathy with Taksin and if he is corrupted, he should be charged as such but a proper reinvestigation should be carried out by the NACC to be legitimate to the world.

Since the coup, Thailand's courts have become nothing but a political tool. The Thai justice system is anything but just. Tying ribbons on a street sign or selling flip flops will land you in jail but getting a mob together to take over airports... The rest of the world doesn't respect Thai court decisions which is one reason why TS has never been extradited. Being a convicted fugitive sounds bad but being a convicted fugitive from Thailand - not so much. And I'm sure some would blame all this on TS as well.

Discussion 5 bkk-farang : Ex-parte hearing could only be started only after Thaksin has take plea first in the mention session. This is the rule of game in court.
