Chockchai appointed acting THAI president

Thai Airways International (THAI) on Monday appointed Chokchai Panyayong as acting THAI president, replacing Piyasvasti Amranand.

Ampon Kitti-ampon, chairman of THAI's board of directors, said the airline had given Mr Piyasvasti one month's notice and will pay him six month's salary, as is due to him under his contract.

Sources said Mr Piyasvasti's payout would be about 5.4 million baht.

Khun Chockchoi can't be compared to his predecessor and obviously is - a members of a different Club.

Take the damn PT to court Dr P. Since the courts are still upholding the laws and do not dance ( yet) to PT and Dubai's tunes, the embarrassment will be guaranteed!!

out goes a very capable executive and in, I'm sure, comes a figure head crony of the man in Dubai!

Unfortunately Disc. 1 the Government believes; that’s why they do what they want as they do not expect any refusal or opposition to any of their action or decisions.

This airline is expensive and out of touch with todays market .Just because you are the only Thai international airline doesn't mean people don't have other options .I would never fly Thai .

This is most unfortunate. I have had the pleasure of meeting Khun Piyasvasti and working a little bit with his staff. I found them to be excellent and most courteous. This is a big loss for Thai Air.

Dr P. has been targeted by PT for a while now. He was brought in by the Democrat back in 2009 and has somehow managed to hold on to his post despite the sweeping changes that has happened in other state enterprises. Also, keeping in mind that the coming of the 111 banned politicians would have to be followed by the mass awarding of top state enterprise posts for the various PT 'retainers' (who have shown loyalty to the exiled politicians) - one could easily see that firing Dr P. would be like killing two birds with one stone (i.e it would open up new position for PT to reward their loyal retainer AND get rid of the last bastion of Dem's influence in the Thai Govt). Indeed, it's a surprise that Dr. P lasted even this long...

While all this sounds good in theory, one has to question whether this move is really practical. Dr. P is highly regarded by the business communities - both overseas and in Thailand. He has done a good job of running the airline, and is well liked by Thai air employees and labor union (a rare combination for a Thai Airways president indeed). Keep in mind that this guy was also an energy minister at one point. Already, Dr P. is refusing to go down easily, and if this thing goes to court then it could even turn out to be an embarassment for PT. Just seems like a lot of effort for one lousy state enterprise post, surely?

Well, all I can say is - whoever is given the Thai Air CEO post, he (or she) better be worth all that trouble for PT and its allies....

I tried to avoid flying Thai at all cost, mainly because of the cost.

If the Thai government sacked everyone that couldn't do their job, there would be no one left in the cabinet. 5,000 deaths in the south, no one sacked. Billions in flood damage caused by mismanagement of water resources, no one sacked. Protests and burning in Bangkok, no one sacked. Then to have one airline president sacked because of lack of communication? Does the government really believe the people are at stupid to believe this is nothing but a politically motivated power move. My god Thailand when are you going to wake up and make these politicians accountable for their actions?
