Charter vetting put on ice

Escalating tension forces court to take swift action

The Constitution Court has ordered parliament to suspend its vetting of the charter amendment bill, pending a review of its constitutionality.

Police attempt to hold back People’s Alliance for Democracy demonstrators at the Karn Ruean intersection as they try to force their way through to block a route to parliament on Friday. The blockade has forced an indefinite adjournment of House meetings. KITJA APICHONROJAREK

A hearing is scheduled for July 5 and 6 and a ruling can be expected if the evidence is complete.

Good decision made by the court using common sense; Thailand don’t need this bill be rushed through the parliament just to benefit some “wrongdoers”, Thailand has a lot more important things to do and needs to find a way which benefits the majority of the country and not only a few..

Hi becky32; Sondhi walks around so does Thaksin of course in different countries but both are doing the same organizing rallies for different reasons. So no double standard; we don’t need either one.

Discussion 9 – But this is an elected government. PT was able to form the coalition. The coalition unanimously chose the PM. This is how it is suppose to work. If the people do not like the performance of the government and the PM, they need to vote them out of power in the next election. Regardless if we like TS or not, he is Thai and he has much influence over the government. And all Thais had known this when the government was elected. So what do you suggest? Military rule? Certainly looks like we are headed in that direction again! Thanks to PAD

The Charter ammendment bill has nothing to do with the recent legislation proposal about reconciliation.

Nothing in article 68 of the Constitution states that anyone other than the Prosecutor General can file directly with the court on this matter.

Luckily for the Democrat party, the court spokesman stated that no party dissolution would result from this ruling. Had he not stated this, then Wirat Kallayasiri would clearly have put his Party in direct violation of article 68 himself.

Whilst I appreciate that the court was attempting to cool the current situation, it more than anyone else must strictly adhere to the constitution, and not bend or ignore parts of the constitution for politcal expediency.

I clearly stated that I believe this legislation should be presented, discussed, debated & then voted upon. That's democracy! Not the infantile, self-righteous disturbances of a few, the remnants of Thailand's BKK 'elite' (of which you are, in your opinions, one). We no longer have the educated ruling class ruling over the serfs! Even your home (England) abandoned this many years ago...

... nevertheless, the key issue is reconciliation & I challenge you & others to present a viable alternative. Just to shout 'dictatorship' is old hat... anyway, that's what the coup got us, a ruling council of generals who dictated policy. You didn't complain because you liked what they did. Now, Songhi presented a bill, don't you think that he might understand the importance of Thai unity?

Personally I believe as long as we see the present leaderships of Aphisit for the Democrats and Thaksin for the ruling party, both tainted with colors, nepotism and corruption of unprecedented scales, the country will go nowhere but backwards, as over the past 6+ years.
It is sad that the country has no new blood of politicians, individualy as a new choice, making a stand for the sake of clean democratic people principles, and push for a new kind of leadership, bringing the country forward to stability and prosperity.

Very wise decision from the Constitutional Court to put this " Whitewash Farce" on hold!!!

The crowds are only going to grow. It is not an endorsement of PAD, their methods or agenda. It is hatred for the elitist despot Thaksin Shinawatra and his insistence of destroying the lives of 65 million people for his own self-serving agenda. PTP wants to talk about "legitimate" governments - yet their party is led by the sister of a deposed tyrant, who ran on the campaign slogan "Thaksin thinks, Peau Thai does." Sound about as nepotistic and illegitimate as it gets.

Hillfarang - Is your version of democracy that the party with the majority vote can pass any law it wishes without any checks and balances?
That the opposition party should be denied the right to speak in Parliament?
That a bill can be pushed through without considering the damage to the country it will cause?
What do you think will happen if Thaksin comes back without punishment? Do you foresee a peaceful reconciliation? Or more mass demonstrations?

"Thailand has NEVER ever been divided like this,"

... and you blame TS who left the country? Oh my! Try focusing on the PAD who are back in action, disrupting the government, just as they did before...

"Democracy? farther from the truth it cannot be. Dictatorship masquerading as democracy it is."

You think so, hmmm... after the country had a peaceful election & formed a legitimate government, it's not democracy because you & a handful of others do not agree with who won.. ha-ha... so sad...
