Critics blast top cop's Thaksin trip

Meeting with fugitive leader called unethical

National police chief Priewpan Damapong has come under fire after leaving the country to meet fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in Hong Kong.

Priewpan: Flew to HK for Thaksin’s birthday

Anti-Thaksin critics said Pol Gen Priewpan either breached the law or seriously violated professional ethics in failing to arrest the former leader.

"Although travelling to meet Thaksin does not violate the law, it shows a disregard for ethics and this is a serious problem for a government official."

Since when has any Thai government official or MP been at all concerned about ethics?

When you have money you can buy many friends ...but How can you trust a Thai top cop meeting a Thai fugitive....hummm Very Difficult to trust this man

It wouldn't have been an issue if the top cop wasn't an (ex)relative of the fugitive, along with the Prime Minister, another former Prime Minister, a former top general, the list goes on...Anyway, it's just the sort of ethical misstep we've come to expect of the police in this country. The rift between the two camps centers around poor law respect for the law, with ironies on both sides.

Android - "When PM Yingluck met her brother Thaksin in Cambodia, the anti-Thaksin elements don't yell a sound."

Wrong, there were plenty of people that were upset and felt as a leader she should have been home when the CC decision was handed down. But in typical PTP leader fashion, she thought it safer to be in another country if the red shirts rioted again.

What are the red shirts going to say when the courts under the current government convict Thaksin in the KTS loan scandal? I don't think most of you really even know why you defend him.
BTW, several more people killed in the South by the lack of action of this inept government while this is going on. Thaksin is one of the most selfish people on the face of the earth.

Disc. #51..."...he is a criminal and a perpetrator of crimes against humanity. in a good world he would be in den hague standing trial".......Don't mean to upset you, but there is only one Thai Politician currently being investigated by the ICC....and it is not Mr. Thaksin

    englishbob D36.

You say Thaksin is "a thief on the run", can you provide details of his conviction for theft.

  • Discussion 56 : 26 Jul 2012 at 19.0756

Well, there is legal precedent in Priewpan's decision to ignore Thaksin's fugitive status. Every civilized country in the world ignores his fugitive status as well and he seems to travel unhindered by any arrest warrant or extradition request. I suppose this is due to the fact that the politically biased conviction has no or dubious merit.

the chief of police who is being entertained in hong kong by a convicted criminal on the run should be in south of thailand doing his duty taking control of the escalating violence and the loss of five brave policeman its a national disgrace
