Kittiratt, Korn spar over rice price schemes

Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong and former finance minister Korn Chatikavanij traded verbal blows over their rice price support schemes Wednesday night.

Both men insisted farmers benefited more under their own administrations.

The pair were guest speakers of the Federation of Thai Capital Market Organisations which hosted a dinner talk for them to discuss their visions for the economy.

mitrapaap: I asked my wife about this. She said the poor farmers are happy they are getting a small amount of money, and are OK with the corruption, and the hi-so's getting a lot. Crazy.

D11+12: Thanks for that information. What an unforgivable shame then that the PT scheme was implemented. I guess the only reason the farmers are not on the streets is becuase they can't afford it financially and unfortunately the man far away won't pay them to oppose his own party.

PTP's Rice Mortgage Scheme was such a big and proven failure once. Why walk the down the same plank? If its so good, why is the country in 200 billion debt from the scheme alone?

#4: they did a blind poll before the election last year. Showing PTPs platform of offerings vs. the Dems. The Dems won. Take the politics out of it and what the Dems had on offer was more desired by the population.

But a comparison HAS been done. Last year before the election, there was a blind test. Farmers were shown the two schemes side by side, but they weren't told which political party proposed each one. Overwhelmingly the Dem scheme was seen as more workable and fair.

To those defending PT scheme - there IS no defence. It's a stupid policy. Always was and (unless the rest of the world's rice crop fails next year) always will be.

A 'mine is bigger' contest? Both should stop playing politics with the economy.

Dis 3 & Dis 6 – If I have a choice of buying two of the same type of product, but one is of considerable better quality, I will generally pay more for the better quality product providing I have the money to do so. Thailand has not been the world’s leading exporter of rice for as long as most of us can remember by providing an inferior product. Yes the completion is stiff from other countries, and I’m certain there will be a fare bit of horse trading going on to secure the contracts which I might add is quite common in negotiations. But if Thai exporters are going to undercut the government set price, then it will be much more difficult for the government to negotiate any agreement.

"When will somebody make a poll among 4000 farmers allover the country about which system was better for them, the Dem's or the PT's? That would give us an idea who's right and who's wrong."

This is exactly what i was thinking!

but it will never be done unbiasly

@D1 it beats me why would you want to bring something to do with anyones ancestors? Let's just stick to the current generation by taking a good look at criminals who run our country.
