Kittiratt, Korn spar over rice price schemes

Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong and former finance minister Korn Chatikavanij traded verbal blows over their rice price support schemes Wednesday night.

Both men insisted farmers benefited more under their own administrations.

The pair were guest speakers of the Federation of Thai Capital Market Organisations which hosted a dinner talk for them to discuss their visions for the economy.

So what did they say about their vision for the economy which was the subject of the dinner? BTW D2@ggh I do not think it is the millers flooding the market with cheap rice, it is that countries such as Vietnam and India produce a more competitively priced product - a fact that the government has chosen to ignore when setting the pledging price. In addition as you can see from the other article today the scheme causes our farmers to seek to produce more rice. This will create further downwards pressure on prices unless demand increases

Like all of Thaksins schemes of course the recipients will say its great because its free money paid for by the tax payer .They just make it up as they go along .Thaksin doesnt really want PT to shine too much because it would take away from his potential luster if he ever managed to sneak back into the country .

When will somebody make a poll among 4000 farmers allover the country about which system was better for them, the Dem's or the PT's? That would give us an idea who's right and who's wrong.

Is it somehow symptomatic, that politicians talk and talk and argue but never really ask the target audience for their opinion?

D2: and where exactly do you think goes part of the money received from government to government deals? And why would another government be stupid enough to buy rice at a price that is almost twice the market price? Well, maybe if that other government is corrupt as well, and some of the money allegedly spent to buy the golden Thai rice goes into their own pockets. Just wait and see what government will buy it.

If the government can secure direct government to government contracts at the increased price for a higher quality product than the competition, this will be a successful program. If they are undermined by exporters and miller who flood the market with imported rice and export for less than the government, then yes the government will shoulder the loss and the scheme will be a failure. So if there would be any chance of success, the government must put an end to the corrupt practices.
