UDD matches reward for men in black

The red-shirt people group on Friday offered another one million baht reward for information about the men-in-black said to killed protesters and soldiers during 2010 political violence.

Somwang Assarasi, a core leader of the United front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), said this is in addition to one million baht bounty already announced by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

Mr Somwang, a deputy agriculture and cooperatives minister, said the red-shirts’ reward will be given to any person who provides information about the men-in-black leading to the arrest of suspects in each of the following cases:

- The case of Maj Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, who was shot dead near Silom subway station;
- The case of Col Romklao Thuwatham and four other soldiers who were killed by grenade shrapnel on Dinso Road in Phra Nakhon district;
- The case of Japanese reporter Hiroyuki Muramoto, who was killed by a gunshot near Khok Wua intersection;
- The case of Italian photographer Fabio Polenghi, who was killed by a gunshot on Ratchadamri Road in Lumpini area of Pathumwan district;
- The case of Mst Sgt Withaya Phromsamli, who was killed by an M79 grenade explosion that also wounded six other soldiers in front of Uechueliang Building on Rama IV Road;
- The case of Pvt Narongrit Sara, who was killed by a gunshot near the National Memorial in Don Muang area.

Mr Somwang hoped that the additional reward would encourage witnesses of the incidents to come out and provide the needed information for police.

He said former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had claimed that the men in black were behind the killings, but his democrat-led government failed to arrest the suspects while still in office for more than one year after the May 2010 bloodshed.
