Security tight for Thaksin visit

Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat said Sunday he was confident Myanmar authorities would provide security for fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra during his visit near the Thai-Myanmar border this month.

"There is nothing to worry about. I believe for someone like former prime minister Thaksin, he must have planned [his trip to Myanmar] well and [must have been] confident before coming, because he has come close to death and survived several assassination attempts,” said ACM Sukumpol, who is Thaksin’s classmate of Class 10 at the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School.

"I am confident that Myanmar will handle it well, with their military and police officers. Do not worry too much.”

@Disc 4 JohnB - War on drug was popular at first because people thought the police were actually catching drug dealers and criminals. BUT in the end, more than half of those killed were innocent civilians, or wrongly convicted drug users. Thaksin issued a shot on sight policy with no questions ask.

#4 And let me remind you, as unpopular and undesirable as a coup might be, it is exactly this point of view you share with PTP/UDD supporters that makes such drastic measures necessary. Your acceptance of suspending the rights of others based on what is "popular," is intolerable, and a government that operates under such a premise is unacceptable and wholly illegitimate.

#4 and so is exposed the fatal flaw of "democracy," the suspension of others' rights simply because it is "popular" to do so. Most of the 3,000 mass murdered over 90 days under Thaksin Shinawatra had nothing to do with drugs. This is why warrants, arrests, and trials exist, to prevent innocent people from being victimized in witch hunts. Your defense of deplorable mass murder is hypocritical and above all, sickening.

A defence minister worrying about the security of a fugitive. This regime is sinking lower every day.

  • Discussion 7 : 04 Nov 2012 at 22.447

This is amazing! The foreign minister of Thailand is so concerned about the safety of a fugitive instead of arranging for his arrest. Can we still need this government? The people in Bangkok, please ask your own conscience.

The defense Minister says of Thaksin - " he has come close to death and survived several assassination attempts," What a load of rubbish. I remember each of those incidents, staged by the man himself. Pure smoke and mirrors !
