Pheu Thai: Abhisit should resign as MP

Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva should resign as an MP now that the Defence Ministry had issued an order to strip him of his military rank, says a Pheu Thai Party spokesman.

The case in which Mr Abhisit was accused of draft-dodging was closely followed by the general public, who wanted to see whether the former premier had really used falsified military documents as alleged, said Prompong Nopparit.

Because the defence panel had ruled that Mr Abhisit had dodged military conscription and the Defence Ministry had stripped him of his rank and pay, he should resign as an MP to show political responsibility, the spokesman said.

    I am confused. Why does the civilian government, including the PM Ms Yingluck sometimes wear a military style uniform?

    "Is this the best they can come up with?" I agree, it's a bit like getting Samak for appearing on a TV cooking show.

    The question is not whether he can produce documents from 25 years ago but whether they were genuine.

    I'm working from memory here so I may not be 100% accurate but I think that the army investigated this when AV first became Dem leader and a couple of junior army officers were disciplined for providing AV with fake documents. There was nothing said at the time about whether AV new the documents were fake or not and the whole thing died down.

    I have some sympathy with AV on this but he does have some questions to answer and so far he hasn't denied anything, just argued about the investigation process.

    "Section 182. The ministership of an individual Minister terminates upon: (5) being disqualified or being under any of the prohibitions under section 174;
    Section 174. A Minister must ... not be under any of the prohibitions as follows: ... 102 (6);
    Section 102.(6) having been expelled, dismissed or removed from the official service, a State agency or a State enterprise on the ground of dishonest performance of duties..." - 2007 Constitution

    Abhisit should resign because he no longer has a military rank. Sounds very Thai politics to me. As usual these tongue-in-cheek comments from Peua Thai's finest forget to inspect their own house for the list of convicted, bailed, on trial... The Democrats might actually do better in the elections if they had a leader who was caustic, dodgy, inarticulate and controversial. He is far too intelligent, refined, educated and well spoken (when he speaks to the foreign press), totally unsuitable to lead this country.

    Yes, Abhisit should resign and Taksin should give himself up and do his time too.

  • Discussion 22 : 09 Nov 2012 at 20.0222

    PT really doesn't want Abhisit to resign. With Abhisit around leading the Dems, PT will have no trouble continually beating them in the battle of public opinion and elections.

    Can yingluck prove that all the PT MPs served their time cleanly in the army before spurting out this nonsensical claim?

  • Discussion 20 : 09 Nov 2012 at 19.5920

    Disc16 Dom - He IS the MR Clean of politics... Is this the best they can come up with?

    So far he is guilty of not being able to produce original documents from 25 years ago... Do YOU have all your original documents from 25 years ago? It's hardly compelling, is it? And considering all the filth and criminality of the Shinawatra family that you defend, even if he's guilty, it's on a par with a 25 year old parking ticket.

    Good. Eventually, there will be no MP left in Thailand. Go ahead. AV is wrong because he demand ethical MP. Other MP are not wrong because they never demand any ethical politician.
