Pitak Siam leader denies aiming to "freeze" Thailand

BANGKOK - The Pitak Siam group has never called for the country to be closed to outsiders but only wants to stop corrupt politicians, Gen Boonlert Kaewprasit said on Sunday morning.

He said this before launching convoys of vehicles in a campaign for the people to join the planned rally at the Royal Plaza on Nov 24 in a show of force against the government for turning a blind eye to acts of lese majeste, acting as a puppet of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and allowing corruption to become widespread without proper suppression.

To D9. You must be American. Most countries have more than 2 parties. What happened in the past was called a coalition government where the various parties joined together with whom the were best aligned, and the group with the most votes formed the Government. It is not anything like what you described. Get your head out of American politics and look at things from an unbiased perspective. The last Government was completely legitimate under the Thai political system. It is unfortunate that they never realy had a chance to govern, as they had to use most of their time and resources fiting off the constant attacks from the Red camp and Mr. T

Dis #1, the difference is Boonlert's demonstration and activities are to bring down a legit government by a coup and that's is illegal.. While the UDD demonstration is all about pushing for an early democratic election and perfectly legal. That's the point Prompong was stating.

    Discussion 9,
As far I know, MPs do not have to swear allegiance to any party, any MP can vote in any way he likes. The people do not vote for a PM or government, they only vote for MPs who then vote for a Prime Minister to form a government. Therefore any Prime Minister elected by the MPs in parliament is legal and has the authority to form the government. Comments about unelected government are really silly.

    Discussion 10,
Did I said something about his popularity...it is Prompong who said that 94% are against him, so we just wait and see. Probably the PT MPs won't need escape ladders as the former PM Somchai to escape.

RE: D2 andreaust If General Boonlert is so popular then why not run for election or support a party that does. Does he have a problem with the Democratic process? Why is he openly calling for a coup? or the physical over throw of the duly elected government. If he knows of corruption, why does he not file case in courts? As his people installed the courts so it should not be a problem if he has any thing other than rhetoric.

What happened in the past is akin to the courts in the USA ruling the Democrats to be dissolved and putting the Republicans in power - would you all consider this to be the "elected government" ? Of course not.

The red rallies were against the elected government being kicked out and the losing (lost by a landslide) opposition being put in power.

This rally is nothing more than a landslide losing opposition party trying again to subvert elections and get back in power.

The red rallies had a justification in at least the opposition were put into power in an unelected fashion, this new Yellow rally has no justification whatsoever.

Whats the big deal about this article? Everyone calls for the end of corruption. What else is new?

  • Discussion 6 : 18 Nov 2012 at 16.046

This guy is nothing but a thorn in the side of Thailand. I wouldnt trust him as far as i could throw him

  • Discussion 5 : 18 Nov 2012 at 15.555

    Joke of the day.

If Pheu Thai finds out that any politicians or parties are involved in such a campaign, the party will file a petition to get them dissolved...
