Rally fizzles out amid safety fears

Boonlert says authorities inciting violence

Pitak Siam leader Boonlert Kaewprasit ended his anti-government rally and his own brief political career on a drizzly Saturday afternoon after a day of high drama and scattered violence.

A Pitak Siam protester holds up a tear-gas canister that police had fired near the Makkawan Bridge on Saturday morning.

Addressing an estimated 20,000 supporters from the Royal Plaza stage, he asked them to disperse peacefully.

You do have to wonder what the UDD really think about the PT/UDD government moving ever nearer to deploying the Thai army against its citizens (even if they are political opponents) given the outcome in 2009 and 2010?

"Pitak Siam members say they will deploy some 2,000 guards.."

If any violence erupts, or buildings get burnt by a third hand, Gen Boonlert can rest assure that this government will have the ethical decency not to call these 2,000 guards MIB or terrorists.

53 checkpoints along the major highways to Bangkok , 9 roads around the rally side closed and 20,000 police and soldiers. Today we will see many video clips and pictures in the TV from angry people who are blocked from reaching the rally site in time. But this will not prevent the people from joining the rally. They will come late, but they will come.

Amazing Thailand. Government seems paranoid and the other side seems to want to pick a fight - maybe be martyrs. Whatever you call this silliness, one thing is certain - it is not the road to reconciliation.
