Rally fizzles out amid safety fears

Boonlert says authorities inciting violence

Pitak Siam leader Boonlert Kaewprasit ended his anti-government rally and his own brief political career on a drizzly Saturday afternoon after a day of high drama and scattered violence.

A Pitak Siam protester holds up a tear-gas canister that police had fired near the Makkawan Bridge on Saturday morning.

Addressing an estimated 20,000 supporters from the Royal Plaza stage, he asked them to disperse peacefully.

The ISA order covers 3 districts in Bangkok, Pol. Gen. Adul must be kidding. Why all over the country, all the roads leading to Bangkok were blocked, every traveler was questioned and searched for weapons? What the government said is just a front to make it looks good to the world but the actual deed is completely different. Pol. Gen. Adul failed to keep his words he gave to Gen Boonlert, he ordered the polices to hurt Pitak Siam people who carried no weapons. The government is a conniving group of people always ready to distort the facts just to protect themselves. We can find no truth nor justice from this government.

#156 - yes excellent point - when the UDD Thaksinphiles have a chance to cheat and skew polls, they do - as seen here in Bangkok Post's comment sections. On an average day they don't even bother to thumb up their own ridiculous, repetitive comments - now all the sudden there are scores of pro-Thaksinites?

soltair - "Funny how the Reds are manipulating here again, is this how you won the election? Give it a rest, try to be honest, it's so obvious."

    Quite obvious. And funny.

D 121 The Nation placed an interesting photo of the "peaceful" protesters. It shows a man kicking a policeman and another armed with a pipe in the process of hitting at the police.

Its quite interesting to see how many so called well educated people who prefer a military controlled government instead of a democratic elected government, and at the same time they call them selves democrats. In a democracy people get the leaders they deserve. Just take a look at the history from Italy. In the end democracy will win, but it takes time for a country to learn the lesson.

The PTP's actions today were true to form for Thaksin. It's how he conducted business when he was PM: over-reaction, increasing strangleholds on opposing views, including the stifling of the press, more and more dictatorial control with intent in the end of declaring martial law in the face of the PAD protests in 2006. That's why he was removed. He was becoming too dangerous.

Now we have ver. 2.0 and the same modus operandi on the part of little sister and Thaksin's other sycophants.

Sure, they'd be elected again tomorrow, if there was an election. Money and corruption can buy anything in this country, especially 'Thaksinocracy'.

"This rally is illegitimate," said Thida Thavornseth, chairwoman of the United Front for Democracy, earlier in the day."

That statement says all anybody needs to know about red shirts. What a joke, fraud and hypocrite she is.

khunbill - " I see the Dems, Pad, Yellow supporters are out in full force here today"

As are those that want to silence any dissenting voice - you, android, peterd, etc. Hilarious.

This government has severely restricted the right for people to demonstrate, and apparently it was the police, blocking all important inroads, who caused the situation to grow violent. Instead of allowing the democratic process of demonstrating to freely go ahead, which would have confirmed their claimed political aim of giving and allowing the people full democracy and for which they were voted into office, the Shinawatra administration has betrayed the Thai electorate by implementing the exact opposite. Is this what the Red Shirts have fought for? Did those who died at Ratchaprasong while demonstrating for this noble cause die in vain?

Is this the same Police force that chose to do nothing at all during the long, disruptive, violent red shirt protests? This puppet government is a sham so clearly being controlled from overseas. Thailand needs real politicians working for the good of the country & it's people, not a corrupt family business dynasty. See the history of Suharto & Marcos for where this set up has lead in the past.
