Protest truck driver released on bail

The driver of a six-wheeled truck that rammed into a police barrier at Makkhawan Rangsan bridge and hurt a number of policemen on Saturday during the rally by the Pitak Siam group has been freed on 50,000 baht bail, Crime Suppression Division deputy chief Prasopchok Prommoon said on Monday.

Pol Col Prasopchok said the driver, Somsamai Nithachi, 58, who was detained at the CSD headquarters for questioning after being arrested, confessed to his actions.

He was charged with violating the Internal Security Act (ISA), obstructing and hurting authorities on duty.  However, his offence did not warrant an attempted murder charge, Pol Col Prasopchok said.

    At least the government has not stooped to the level of the 2010 government and demanded that the protesters by arrested for terrorism charges. I would like to know who ordered him to drive the truck into the police lines which I do believe was a deliberate attempt to provoke the police into fighting back and an attempt to create an excuse for a coup. I do not however believe the military was very co-operative whit the rally organizers in this regard nor had any intentions of being provoked into a coup either.

    This at least makes some sense with the bail matching the charge unlike the Krabi rape suspect and the convicted murderers on death row being allowed out for their last goodbyes (or not)
