Abhisit gears up to battle murder rap

Former PM says charges are politically motivated

Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva says he would be ready to accept the death sentence if it was handed down to him as a result of the investigation into his government's crackdown on red-shirt protesters in 2010.

He was speaking after he and Democrat MP Suthep Thaugsuban were charged on Thursday by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) with authorising the killing of anti-government protesters during the April-May 2010 political violence in Bangkok.

Mr Suthep was deputy prime minister under the Abhisit government and headed the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES), which was set up to handle the protests.

    @ricefield d.33.

    Please check your facts. Thaksin had 30 days to appeal, but decided not to!

    @android d.32.

    Please read the news before commenting. Mr. Abhisit does NOT want a pardon, as he does not believe he has done anything wrong. Most likely the trial will confirm this, time will tell.

    I don't think your threatening Mr. Abhisit with not getting a pardon he does not want to begin with scares him much :-D

    Android: You are not getting this ice cream Mr. Abhisit.
    Abhisit: I don't like ice cream, and I don't want your ice cream, thank you.
    Android: HA, now you are really really not getting this ice cream!!

    @snap, d.27.

    Have you considered that maybe the reason no lives were lost during the yellow shirt airport occupation, is that the yellow shirts did not run around shooting people?

    I agree that someone should be held responsible for the 90+ deaths. You and I probably do not agree on who that should be though :-)

    Whether AV chooses to fight or to run....the outcome makes no difference to him!

    Disc50 DomDunn " the courts certainly do not act on the instructions of this government."

    I beg to differ... Since the election last year there have been a spate of verdicts that have gone PT's way (and by PT I mean the Shinawatras). Potjaman's conviction was overturned. The Shinawatra kids suddenly became tax exempt.

    You're not stupid. You know who's pushing this case forward and why. Abhisit and Suthep aren't afraid because they took such lengths to prevent the use of force, while UDD provoked a fight every step of the way.

    @Rab.Madar, d25.

    "Mr Abhisit, you would like to be a martyr ?, I don't thinks so. Whatever happens now you will always be remembered as a Tyrant."

    By you perhaps. My family and I will always remember Mr. Abhisit as the man who saved our livelihoods (maybe even lives) from a mob that went berserk.

    You are of course entitled to your opinion, but don't fool yourself and think everyone thinks like you.

    A death sentence seems a bit absurd. They were trying to restore order. Too many people were killed however. It seems like some charge of "misuse of the Military" would be appropriate. A sentence of a few years, with only 6 months served, or something similar.

    Who ever floated the idea of a "death sentence"? If it is Abhisit, he is not helping reconcilliation, and should be ashamed of himself.

    domdunn/ D52:

    Interesting freudian typo in your post. The second set of initials (TS) suggests, however subconsciously, that your hero the fugitive convict has some explaining to do to the courts and the nation as well. In that I would actually agree with you for a change.

    Today I have had derogatory personal messages because of my negative feelings towards Abhisit. I am, and always will be a staunch follower of Thaksin and his sisters government , both of them have brought good things to Thailand, more than any other party, and have improved the living conditions nationwide. What have the Democrats done - nothing, that is of course Abhisit. This is the reason why he is not the Prime Minister. I can well imagine he will be convicted for his crimes.

    @android d7, and others

    Have you considered the possibility that Mr. Abhisit actually WANTS to clear his name in court?

    While you may not like it, I can almost guarantee that the court will find Abhisit not guilty, which he of course already knows, which is partly why he can promise in advance to accept the verdict.
    And what better strategic move for Abhisit than having his name cleared once and for all by a court while his opponents (PTP/red shirts) are in charge. (Will make it very hard for the PTP to claim afterwards that the ruling was biased, and will make Mr. Thaksin look even weaker as he obviously did not face the music like a
