Govt 'unaware' of Thaksin broadcast

Critics in uproar over Channel 11 address

The government is on the defence and says it was unaware that deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra would be appearing during the state-run Channel 11 kickboxing broadcast on Sunday.

The claim follows severe criticism from Thaksin's critics, who have threatened to initiate probes against the government and its Public Relations Department (PRD).

The opposition Democrat Party said it would ask the Office of the Ombudsman to investigate who gave the broadcast the go-ahead while the Green Politics group plans to take the matter to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

"but if the governemnt control the media too much, many people talk about censored, and call the goverment a regime or dictatorship. so what the government should do ? give more freedom the the media or control everything?"

But according to the article, this was a state-run channel. That means they should have control over and responsibility for what is broadcast on it. It only becomes a regime or censorship when the government controls or censors all or most channels.

Having said that, I am wondering what a boxing match is doing on Gov-TV in the first place. I am not a big TV watcher, but aren't there any sports channels in Thailan

I strongly belive that the out-post Thaksin shoud stay away from Thai polictis, and should come to face the Thai court, if he think he do no wrong!!!

sorry, but i dont understand the logic from some people here:
if the government say "We didnt know", some people ask "why you you dont know ?"
but if the governemnt control the media too much, many people talk about censored, and call the goverment a regime or dictatorship.
so what the government should do ? give more freedom the the media or control everything ?

This infacuation with Thaksin has not gotten well beyond ridiculous. If as much time were spent on helping and working for the betterment of the country as is spent on one individual just think how much better things could be. It is time to get to work for the country and people and forget about this man.

I don't care that Thaksin was on TV...

But I love Peua Thai's squirming. There are only two explanations... They are dishonest or they are incompetent. Well... Which is it? Oh of course... They could be both.

Its funny how PT and UDD think they are above the law yet use it when ever they find it convenient .

Government did not know? Ripley said it all, " Believe it or believe it not".
Khun Noppadon's song sheet is getting a bit tattered from constant use on themes he must know are nonsense (*but he is well paid to continuing his singing). Khun Thaksin is perfectly at liberty to return and defend himself in several outstanding cases. Why does he not? Aha!

I agree with D7. Thaksin's opposition are they're own worst enemy. By raising such a fuss, Thaksin just gets more publicity which is what he wants. If they would have just ignored this TV appearance then only a few people who watched the program would have heard his message. But alas, now a whole lot more people know about it.

Mr. Noppadon Pattama should know better as a lawyer, if Thaksin deserves to defend himself why don’t you advise him to come to Thailand to defend himself? What is he so afraid of?
