Ex-parks chief registers party

Former parks chief Damrong Pidech has registered a political party aimed at reclaiming illegally occupied forest land.

Mr Damrong, as announced earlier this month, appeared Wednesday at the Election Commission to officially register the Tuang Kuen Puen Pa (Thai Forest Land Reclamation) Party, whose main goal was defined as seizing state land from encroachers and "return forest land to the country."

Mr Damrong was chief of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department until October. He earned a reputation for taking aggressive measures against forest encroachers. He will be the party leader, with former department inspector-general Titi Kanoktaweekan as secretary-general.

He won't be broke for long as political parties receive money from the government funded Political Party Fund. Anyone ever ask why Thailand has so many political parties that have never run a single candidate in an election?

The PPF should be changed to disallow funding to any party that doesn't receive x% (plug in any number you want) of the total national vote this would ensure that they are actually running candidates and not just filling up a bank account.

A brave man. Thais should give him support. I suggest khun Damrong set up a bank account for voluntary donations from the public and businesses and advertise for his mission. I am willing to donate 1000+ baht a month to see where this will lead and I doubt I would be alone in this.

I wish him all the best luck. Thailand needs some political influence from people that are NOT politicians.

“I think no politicians want to join my party because I have no money to give them and the party policies deal with the reclamation of forest lands, which is the opposite of those of other parties that give them away.”

If no money involved, he will surely not get members from the Pheu Thai party.
