NACC asked to act on broadcast

The Green Politics group is asking the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to step into the row over former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's speech from Macau on Sunday.

The party yesterday petitioned the NACC to take legal action against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and two other people for allowing Channel 11 to carry the live broadcast of Thaksin's remarks.

The two others named in the petition are Prime Minister's Office Minister Sansanee Nakpong and Public Relations Department (PRD) chief and Channel 11 director Thirapong Sodasri.

The three have been accused in the petition of malfeasance in violation of Article 157 of the Criminal Code.

Chaturan Boonbenjarat, an assistant coordinator of the Green Politics Party, said the live broadcast of Thaksin's speech at the opening of a Muay Thai event was planned.

It was also relayed by Asia Update, a cable TV station run by the red shirts, and appeared on public TV despite the fact Thaksin is a fugitive from the law.

Mr Thirapong yesterday called on Pol Lt Col Kulthon Prachuabmoh, organiser of the Muay Thai Warriors event, to explain how Thaksin ended up presiding over the opening.

The PRD chief said Pol Lt Col Kulthon, secretary-general of the organising committee, had said he respected the former prime minister so he wanted him to preside over the function.

Pol Lt Col Kulthon has apologised to the department for causing problems over the matter, the department chief said.

Pol Lt Col Kulthon yesterday said he wanted Thaksin to chair the function to commemorate His Majesty the King's 85th birthday. However, the incident was also linked to politics.

He said he had bought airtime from Channel 11 to broadcast the event. As the broadcast drew criticism, he wanted to apologise to PRD officials, staff of the state-run channel and anyone else involved, including the prime minister, Ms Sansanee and the PRD chief.
