DSI chief defends murder charge

Department of Special Investigation chief Tarit Pengdith on Friday defended the DSI's decision to lay murder charges against former premier Abhisit Vejjajiva and his former deputy Suthep Thaugsuban in connection with the 2010 military crackdown on red-shirt protests.

He also set up an inquiry to find out who was responsible for leaking a photograph that showed Mr Abhisit being fingerprinted on Thursday in a supposedly closed room.

'Mr Abhisit said the DSI had given him 45 days to provide extra testimony. After that, the DSI would forward the case to the prosecutor to decide whether to lay indictments' If I understood previously the decision to charge both men was a result of a three way meeting which included the prosecutors office. Khun Abhisit and Suthep were already subject to extensive questioning. Why do I get the feeling that no indictment will actual materialise at the end of the 45 days? These are serious charges and should not be bandied about as part of a political game

This will set a legal precedent and hopefully will deter future leaders in positions to exercise more restraint in handling demonstration.

This is all just sheer political theatre, a Shakespearean satire from the day the UDD planned to amass at Ratchaprasong. It was never principally about 'protesting for democracy', it was always about setting up Abhisit and his govt for equally humiliating measures as Thaksin has had to endure over the years, turning the other side into villains and the applying 'politically motivated' charges. Do I have proof? No! Do I need proof? No, because the evolving events are all so predictably obvious.

    Discussion 20,
I agree with you, AV is not a coward, not like someone who is watching those news hiding in an Arab country.

    "Democrat duo deny murder rap"
I think deny murder trap should be more appropriate.

When AV & ST refused to sign the documents why Tarit did not ask to remand them into custody, I believe Tarit has started shaking a bit knowing that he might be in trouble soon.

Why should they ask for bail, there is no arrest warrant against them.

UDD militants fielded M-16's firing the exact same NATO 5.56mm rounds. They were video taped, photographed, and documented by HRW using them. Unless you can trace the bullet in question back to the soldier's rifle, AND place that rifle in the soldier's hands (many rifles were stolen by the UDD) at the time of death, you don't have a case. In other words, PTP doesn't have a case.

Really PTP? Is this really the best use of the nation's resources? Prosecuting men for a bloodbath of your own design, enabled by militants you yourself armed and put in the streets?
