Charter referendum unlikely to pass, says Peerapan

The government is unlikely to succeed in the referendum which it plans to gauge public support for its efforts to amend the constitution, a member of the charter amendment panel has conceded.

Peerapan Palusuk, a Pheu Thai Party MP for Yasothon, who also serves as a member of the coalition government's committee studying the possibility of amending the constitution, said yesterday his panel had discussed whether it possible the referendum would pass.

Mr Peerapan said he and his panel had realised that even getting out a sufficient number of voters for the referendum would be a difficult task.

It would seem that, as long as an anonymous, well funded, group put out a campaign and leaflets outlining the likely outcome of a complete re-write and how is would probably lead to Thaksin coming home a free man, with a certain group of protestors vehemently taking to the streets, enough of the public could be persuaded that it's more trouble than it's worth. Therefore, with a carefully worded statement they could persuade many not to bother showing up for the referendum. It would be difficult to interpret as 'against EC rules', and antipathy would sink the process. If the referendum fails, will that be the end of the matter.
