Pheu Thai pledges to push charter referendum

The Pheu Thai Party has brushed aside a proposal to amend the constitution section by section and has vowed to move ahead with a plan to hold a referendum on charter amendment.

The decision was reached Friday at a meeting of the party's committee overseeing public relations and campaigning for the referendum.

The move is seen as a blunt rejection of a proposal by Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung who opposes a referendum and calls for the constitution to be amended section by section.

Prompong said the government's campaign was not aimed at altering Section 309. Is that a commitment that Section 309 will be left in place in the new constitution? If it is, the Government should unequivocally say so. It would go a significant way towards countering the argument of those who oppose a charter rewrite on the grounds its real purpose is to whitewash Thaksin and bring him back to Thailand.

Pheu Thai spokesman said the result of various opinion polls suggested more than half of the eligible voters would turn out, whose opinions and what areas did you take the poll? In this household, everybody questions the credibility of the prime minister and this government, whatever tricks you are coming up with, 100% of us is not going to vote any referendum.

It's their call, but if the referendum fails will they abandon the whole idea. Not problem spending 2 billion on this exercise, if it doesn't go Puea Thai's way they well know that the door to parliamentary amendments remains open, though amending doesn't mean retroactive annulment as far as I can see. At least lets clear up this whole 'approve/disapprove of the 2007 charter' argument. And Noppadom well knows that rules or not there's political ways and means to derail something, Dems will just take a leaf out of PTs book and tell everyone they 'will be off sick on the day of the referendum vote'. Rules never stopped Thaksin 'thinking' right?

How about if the PTP tells us right now what changes they want to see, if they are right up front about their goals and plans more folks might back them. But as long as they keep everything secret, then we will assume they are up to no good.
