DSI to explain itself every Wednesday

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will hold a press conference every Wednesday afternoon to explain what it's doing to the public.

DSI chief Tarit Pengdit announced the move on Wednesday.

He said his department has 16 offices handling cases of different kinds, but most people think incorrectly that the DSI is responsible only for political cases and is a tool for the government to launch political attacks on its opponents.

Theisfalse belief led to his being condemned day in day out by the media, he said.

Mr Tarit said he was only the director-general of a department, but had continuously been criticised by as many as 10 million people on a daily basis.

He said that if he had a choice he would not stay in the position.  He said he had been badly bruised, particularly over his handling of political cases.

After the New Year, many other cases directed against former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his ex-deputy Suthep Thaugsuban would follow, he said.

So, the people should also see other aspects of the DSI, Mr Tarit said.

He mentioned in particular the work of the DSI's legal aid centre.  After being set up four months ago, the centre had provided advice to more than 1,000 people with legal problems, he said.

The work of the office in its handling of intellectual property and trademark cases also deserved compliments, Mr Tarit said.
