EC: Sukhumbhand still eligible

MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the incumbent Bangkok governor, is still eligible to contest the coming Bangkok governor election despite being charged over a contract allowing the Bangkok Transit System Co (BTSC) to operate the skytrain extensions, Election Commission secretary-general Puchong Nutrawong said on Thursday.

Mr Puchong said according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Act and Local Election Act, a candidate for the post of Bangkok governor must not have been convicted by a court or detained under a court warrant.

MR Sukhumbhand has just been charged by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI). Even though the case against him has been filed with the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) in the Criminal Court, he is still qualified to run in the election as long as he has not been declared a convict, he said.

They really want to trample the opposition to the deepest level possible. It seems their could be no room for the opposition to escape from this vengeance and greedy actions of some ....

How low the PTP and reds have to stoop. Don't they have any shame? I'd be embarrassed to be associated with them.

Disc.6 ringmaster: The Courts had no time to convict him in any of the other cases because he ran away before even hearing the charges against him, all still pending though, might that be a reason too for him not to come back before getting the total absolution he's trying to ram through?
Disc.3 peterd: Please get real, TS the victim of an ugly game? He's the initiator and mastermind of most ugly games in the last ten years, and his huge ego prevented him from even once admitting any kind of involvement, showing any regret, giving any apology! Wow, what a great human being!

Disc 6 - You forgot to add that to convict him in the land deal they first had to change the law and then use that newly changed law retroactively.

D4 I disagree. Thaksin wasn't clearly guilty of the land deal charge you speak of. He was convicted by a 5-4 vote and there seemed to be some questionable judicial shenanigans. And I doubt he would be convicted on this in any Western country. A question many have is: If Thaksin is this "Dr. Evil" character that so many try to portray him as, then why only convict him of a relatively minor land deal charge?

If you think Thaksin dividing the country and running form his crimes ,Ratchprasong ,mass corruption that hasnt even gone to court yet is comparable ? Notice most here disagree with you .Theres a reason .

Thaksin was clearly guilty of corruption in the land deal. He would have been convicted in any western democracy. Going after Abhisit for something that may have happened 25 years ago is a very different matter.

#1 and #2, you repeat that the politicians use the judiciary system against their opponents. I'm not sure if true (and more if have evidence of corruption or falsified docs) But if it's a bit true, why are you not shocked when it's TS the victim of this ugly game?

That means Tarit will now be busy get a court order to have Sukhumband detained. Got to stop his reelection somehow. That's what true democracy is all about.

So sad that PT has to mud sling their opponents instead of trying to outshine them with actual performance .
