Pheu Thai puts trust in Pongsapat for city race

Tough fight set despite rival's tarnished record

The Pheu Thai Party's executive committee Sunday chose Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen as the party's candidate for the Bangkok governor election in a unanimous decision.

However, analysts predict a tough fight ahead for the deputy national police chief and secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB).

Pol Gen Pongsapat will run against incumbent Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the Democrat Party's nominee.

'Thieves in uniform' is what Thai people call the police (in private). But he has a fresh face and looks are everything such is their political sophistication.

Sukhumbhand's time is up, but PT nominating yet ANOTHER police for top job. This all needs to stop.

the police can't even enforce the traffic rules...and would even take 100 baht bribes. Give me a break.

"this was perfectly demonstrated during the giant flood in 2011, when what Sukhumbhand actually did was to act in the opposite direction of the central government in the national flood relief efforts." Yes he did, thank God. PT wanted to flood the city, even though they realised it would have not lessen the flooding outside the city. Sukhumband kept us dry.

Why vote for a police officer? They did absolutely nothing when Bangkok was reaped in 2010. Why expect that they suddenly will improve the life of Bangkokians, they are corrupt and inept and that will not change soon, look at their flag ships T and usually inebriated C? Honest mistakes, white lies and hot air smelling of alcohol.

PT have shown nothing but contempt for Bangkok .They use it as an ATM to fund their populist handouts .Why would someone vote for that ?

A low level policeman. This is all what the Pheu Thai Party has to offer.
The Pheu Thai Party has 0 chance to win this election and they konow this.
Because there is not much vote buying involved in this election.

Somehow it is surprising that Thaksin did not nominate one of his children to run for the governor job. If someone with no experience can become PM then anyone with the name Shinawatra should be able to administer Bangkok, or not?

Last election, Sukhumbhand won handsomely riding on the coat tail of Apirak. Now with the DSI charges, failures and his handling of the flood, he will be hard pressed to repeat his victory. Pongsapat will be campaigning hard on the government big master plan for the city infrastructure and the sea defense, will have a more palatable platform for the undecided Bangkokians. I take Pongsapat to win by a small margin.
