Ex-governor scoffs at poll

Sukhumbhand predicts last-minute vote surge

MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the Democrat Party's candidate for Bangkok governor, has shrugged off an Abac poll projecting him to finish behind the Pheu Thai Party's Pongsapat Pongcharoen.

He told the Bangkok Post in an exclusive interview Thursday that the race is still in its early stages and the vote could eventually swing in his favour.

He said he is looking to take 1 million votes during the March 3 election.

    I read some opinions on 'single party' here. I don't think there is going to be a single-party Thailand nor a single-party government or parliament. I am more concerned about a parliamentary advantage that was not achieved through an electoral process. We have witnessed to what happened as a result of a parliamentary advantage that was not a result of that process. To argue that people should vote for fear of a party dominating parliament will only be encouraging that. All parties are equal under the constitution.

    @loong - Chamlong was indeed a good governor. He was totally incorruptible, even refusing to accept his salary as governor. (He has an Army pension). Chamlong was a hero in 1992, when he stood up to a military installed government. Unfortunately, he has forever tainted himself by his involvement with Sondhi Limtongkul and the yellow shirts.

    @Eric, d24.

    No, It doesn't matter with how many votes the election is won, nor does it matter who is to blame for the other side winning. What does matter is that it is generally not good for any country if a single party has all the power. Especially not in a country like Thailand where political understanding is limited.

    subconman - "So like or not, if the Dems are even not able to win in a landslide victory in their stronghold of Bkk"

    Did I miss the election already taking place? LOL The latest poll now shows them tied. Any poll can have an anomaly, but I glad to see that it gave some red shirts the courage to post. The many, many articles lately on the rice scheme and South have kept them away.

    Bangkok needs to transform itself very quickly to catch up with other major Asian cities. Chinese cities such as Shanghai and Beijing which started developing a lot later than Bangkok in the early 1990s have already gone far ahead and are beginning to look like a developed nation. As in China, there must be plans set up to build continuous concrete dykes on both side of the chaophraya river, old buildings and shophouses along all main roads needs to be repainted and refurbished, footpaths at road level needs to be levelled and modernised to complement overhead walkways, eradicate drain stench, etc. The task is to keep it neat tidy and modern.

    Bring back Chamlong Srimuang, He is the best BKK's governor from day one with strong discipline and managerial style. He started the sky-train project without the approval from Interior ministry. Bangkokian don't need a cop to run the city, as we all know their reputation is undesirable.

    Sounds like a loser as the race just started. A very bad sign indeed!

    Dis#21, by one party I will assumed you mean winning the election by a landslide. Then the blame must be leveled at the DP by making it too easy for PT. As for Bangkok, it will be close and should Pongsapat win landslide, then it Suk performance as previous governor has make it too easy.

    Discussion 16; I love your red shirt free zone Bangkok..And I am sure the majority of hard working, law abiding and tax paying citizens in Bangkok feel exactly the same!!
