Ex-governor scoffs at poll

Sukhumbhand predicts last-minute vote surge

MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the Democrat Party's candidate for Bangkok governor, has shrugged off an Abac poll projecting him to finish behind the Pheu Thai Party's Pongsapat Pongcharoen.

He told the Bangkok Post in an exclusive interview Thursday that the race is still in its early stages and the vote could eventually swing in his favour.

He said he is looking to take 1 million votes during the March 3 election.

As Thailand is becoming a one party state, more important issues are at stake here. People need to forget the individual candidates and ask themselves. Is it good for Thailand to be ruled by one man (Thaksin) with no opposition whatsoever? If yes, then vote for the PTP candidate, if no, then don't.

Bangkok should be and generally was a cake-walk for the Democrats. If they lose, that sends quite a strong signal about the mood of the Thai people, even in a Democrat stronghold like Bangkok. ABAC polls are no gurantee of success, but they enjoy a pretty good reputation for reliability. Perhaps this expalins the threats to use the courts to disqualify the PTP candidate for making false campaign promises. If so, sounds like Dems are desparate.

Where are the interviews with the other 17 candidates - to be fair?

I think we should vote based more on policies than a political party. Just shows you how divided this country is.

Spiceman D14 The gal, Ratree, was just recently released from Cambodia and the guy, Veera, had his sentence reduced. PT was mainly responsible for this and not the Dems. I believe you are correct though about the election. Sukhumbhand is against the ropes in this election.

Sukhumbhand is for sure no perfect choice but what is the alternative? Does Bangkok really need another Thaksin crony in charge? Imagine the red-shirts will protest again. With a Thaksin friendly governor the protest would probably go on for a year and the police would hold the traffic back to allow free passage for the red heroes.
Maybe Sukhumbhand should have a policy to make Bangkok a red-shirt free zone. I am sure he would win many voters that way.

Bangkok is PADs' stronghold and I don't think they are through with the Democrats yet as long as their guy and gal are still in Cambodian jail. So, for the current incumbent Democrat Governor, I think, it will be an uphill fight all the way against the PTP juggernaut.

we should all elect one of the police officers for Governor of Bangkok...we all know they do their job with diligence and honesty
