Hopefuls told: Get on your bikes

A network of cyclists yesterday applied pressure on key candidates in the Bangkok governor election to make a commitment to promote cycling as a practical mode of city transportation.

CAMPAIGN ROLLS ALONG: Democrat candidate MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra promotes his cycling policy at Thammasat University’s Tha Prachan Campus yesterday.

About 500 cyclists handed a proposal on cycling to Democrat Party candidate MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra and Pheu Thai candidate Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen at Thammasat University.

I have seen both positive and negative remarks about the success of biking
in BKK and agree with both but........ no one can deny that if even 1 person uses
a bike/vs car, things get a tiny bit better ! No shame attached if you saw very rich,
N.Y. Wall St. brokers, in $ 2000 3 piece suits, pedalling their bikes to/from their
limos - it just makes sense as, to them, "time is money " !

Question. How is it possible to cycle in Bangkok? Even motorcycles drive on sidewalks. Even if they construct more lanes then there will be no sidewalks.

D24 majority - Prongsapat appears to be riding in one photo, leaning a bit and only using one hand (which is not a good idea when cycling in a group). But the bike is too small and the helmet fits poorly, so both were obviously provided simply for the photo op. I stand by my earlier statement, neither man rides regularly and neither will truly understand what Bangkok cyclists' need.

I believe a few people here hate to see these pictures posted on Thairath (http://www.thairath.co.th/gallery/view/pol/6182), especially the picture that shows Dr. Pongsapat rides one handed, while waving to the welcoming Bangkokians. You know why those a few people hate that picture. They are jealous as they have always been. Truly deplorable!

Surprised the bicycle could support the weight of his failures. Yes he created 28 death traps for cyclists to end their lives on!

If he actually allowed motorcyclists to use the road instead of treating them as sources of revenue or 3rd class citizens, Bangkok wouldn't have traffic problems.

    To Majority
So many motorbike drivers do not wear helmet because the Police NEVER enforce the law... So to see Policeman Pongsapat wearing helmet in sitting on bicycle is absotlutly no meaning... He is standing up and smiling for a toothpaste advertising, that's all !!!

    to#20
If you look at the photos cautiously, you see MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra drive for a "promenade" (what we would like to do) and Pongsapat stand up for advertising picture (we are not sure he can drive)....

To be a good governor, Dr. Pongsapat sets a good example of wearing helmet while biking. Safety comes first for Bangkokians.

D2 & D11 - Only one candidate is actually pedaling his bike. The other is just sitting on a bike that is too small for him and wearing an improperly adjusted helmet. Neither probably rides a bike regularly, just during photo ops.

Have to agree with rebel4ever - show us a long term viable plan, don't just make promises.

It says it all promoting cycling not wearing protective head gear.A good opportunity missed by the outgoing Mayer. How many more has he missed?
