Thaksin's brother enters temple, quickly promoted

Payap Shinawatra, younger brother of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin, entered the monkhood at a Buddhist temple in India on Feb 10 and was promoted to the position of deputy provost in a week, reports said.

The reports said Mr Payap was ordained at Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya, India, and was given the ordination name of Phra Payap Khemakuno. His stay will be brief and he plans to leave the monkhood on March 11.

A week later, Somdet Phra Thirayanmuni, the abbot of Debsirindrawas Ratchaworawiharn Temple, suddenly promoted Phra Payap Khemakuno to deputy provost, or phra kru palad.

This is bad thing about mixing religion with politic. It doesn't matter how long a person listen to Buddha's words and get enlighten, some might just listen to a few sentence or a few minute then succeeded. For example; Ong Kulimal killed 999 people, when he exposed to Buddha's word only one sentence he's enlighten. IF Thailand didn't mixed Monks with politic this story should not be big a deal.

While the Buddha himself certainly made clear that he was NOT a god, the vast majority of Thais do practice Buddhism as a religion: praying to him for help and worshiping him, etc. http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/religion.

@D17. Buddhism is not a religion

If he wasn't Thaksin's brother it wouldn't be reported, must be something more worth while happening in the world to be reported on? He's in India, so the decision is by their rules, what's the problem?

All religions are the same - if you donate money you will go to heaven.

Next week he will be an arahant.

It is sad that thailand hand of corruption has even reached the holy ground in India. The trumpled of 2500 year old religion that pre-date Christ is lost of words, what else the thais cannot do? He should gently decline the promotion given his family background that would tarnish the ancient religion.

Everybody in the Shinawatra clan is enlightened – does anybody doubt that?

There's a lot to the story not told here. You do not just give this promotion. The facts will come out later about Payap's eligibility. Remember he is in India not Thailand. Do not jump to conclusions over inconclusive information.

    Aren't the real questions:
Why did he go in the temple? What will he do once he's out?
Why did he need this promotion?
    Wild guesses follow:
With this rank he will be allowed to start a temple of his own.
The temple then can give shelter to whoever is chosen to be appropriate.
Thanks to the temple a lot of donations could be hidden from income-taxes.
Perhaps fugitives can be granted "temple asylum".
Lots of possibilities come to mind.
