EC: Thaksin can vote

The Election Commission explained on Sunday that former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was eligible to vote for a new Bangkok governor.

The name of the self-exiled prime minister appeared on the list at the polling station at Pimolwit School in Bang Phlat district in addition to his children, Panthongtae, Pinthongta and Paethongtarn. Their home is in the district.

Commissioner Praphan Naigowit said Thaksin could exercise his vote this time after ending a five-year political ban for general election fraud in May last year that was imposed on him as leader of the defunct Thai Rak Thai Party.

fugitive to vote? Hit my face to wake me up.

If he is eligible to vote and doesn't, I understand from recent cases calling into question some candidates ability to run, as it was thought they had not voted at the last election, he is disqualified from running for political office in the future. Can anyone advise if this is correct?

Mind you, I have long held the belief that he doesn't want to run again. Why would he when he can get everything he wants without being held accountable by the pesky media and voters?

This is acceptable only so long as all other criminals, currently incarcerated, or on the run fugitives from justice are also entitled to vote. Double-standards are a particularly galling aspect of the ruling clan elite.
