Chalerm confirms bill aimed at bringing Thaksin home

UDON THANI: Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung has admitted that his reconciliation draft bill is aimed at bringing former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra home.

Speaking on the red shirt Khon Rak Udon radio station in Udon Thani province yesterday, Mr Chalerm said he had promised constituents in the Northeast that he would bring Thaksin back and his bill, which contains six sections, would make that happen.

But he insisted the bill was not only aimed at helping Thaksin, as it would benefit all those who had been affected by the political unrest of recent years.

Mr Chalerm said has not yet sought approval for his bill from the Pheu Thai Party, as he had only just finished drafting it.

His bill would be discussed with locals first before being presented to his party, he said.

Mr Chalerm said he would tour several provinces to seek public opinion about the bill.

His first stop will be at the Thung Srimuang grounds in Udon Thani on May 24. All members of the public would be invited to go on stage to discuss the bill, Mr Chalerm said. However, they must refrain from insulting the courts and the military and must not refer to the monarchy, he added.

Four other reconciliation bills are pending parliamentary deliberation.

These comprise bills proposed by Matubhum Party leader Sonthi Boonyaratglin, and one each by Pheu Thai MPs Samart Kaewmeechai, Niyom Worapanya and Nattawut Saikuar, also a red shirt leader.
