Dems to run Tankhun in Don Muang

The Democrat Party on Monday resolved to field Tankhun Jitt-itsara as its candidate in the June 16 by-election in Bangkok's Constituency 12 (Don Muang), party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said.

Mr Abhisit announced this after a meeting of the party's executive committee.

The by-election was called after the Supreme Court's Election Cases Division disqualified Karun Hosakul of the Pheu Thai Party for breaking election law during campaigning for the 2010 general election, which he won.

The meeting also considered deputy party leader Alongkorn Polabutr's proposal for reforms in three areas - the party structure, party administration, and the party's culture and personnel management.

Under the proposed reforms, offices would be established for research and development, for the administration of party branches and members, and for the management of Democrat youth and women's affairs.

The party's regional offices would also be restructured.

Former prime minister Abhisit said the executive committee also agreed that Niphon Boonyamanee, a party list MP, would run for election to the post of president of the Songkhla provincial administration organisation (PAO). The current term of the PAO expires in three months.
