Pakdeehan: No House dissolution

The government has no plan to dissolve the House of Representatives and call an election at the end of the year as predicted by Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, deputy government spokesman Pakdeehan Himathongkam said on Friday.

He was responding to a remark by Mr Abhisit in an interview with the Bangkok Post on Thursday that the government's populist policies are failing and it will probably be forced to dissolve the House early to stay in power.

Mr Pakdeehan said the government is implementing the campaign policies promised to the people and the benefits were being seen. They were not failing as claimed by Mr Abhisit.

All cabinet members are working hard and a house dissolution, that would make people’s dreams fade away, is not going to happen at this time, he said.

The deputy government spokesman also rejected  Mr Abhisit’s remark that one indication of preparations being made to dissolve the House was the Pheu Thai Party joining forces with the red-shirt movement to pressure the Constitution Court over its decision to accept a petition against the government's attempt to amend Section 68 of the charter.

He said it was the same old point of view the opposition leader spouted in parliament. In fact, Section 68 had some weak points and Mr Abhisit was also aware of them, but still chose to claim the amendment is an abuse of people’s rights.

The rally in front of the Constitution Court by the Radio Broadcasters for Democracy group was an expression of their constitutional right and there was no violence, Mr Pakdeehan said.

The protesters had dispersed but Mr Abhisit had still tried to link the government to the protest by accusing the government of supporting the rally with the aim at dissolving the lower House, he said.
