Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung will be shuffled to the post of labour minister, replacing Padermchai Sasomsap, as Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra sets about changing some cabinet positions.
Mr Chalerm on Thursday made no comments on speculation about his new position, saying only that he would feel no regret about the decision made by the prime minister.
He said he will remain tight-lipped until His Majesty the King endorses the new list.
But Labour Minister Padermchai said on Thursday that he talked to Mr Chalerm over the phone on Wednesday about the change and was told that the deputy prime minister had no intention to unseat him from the post.
Mr Padermchai said he would also leave the Labour Ministry with no political conflict for his successor.
Mr Chalerm's move to the new position was underlined by the cancellation of a trip to the far South planned for Friday and Saturday.
He said the change was due to the prime minister's decision to call off a meeting of ministers in charge of the southern situation on Thursday.
It is unclear whether Ms Yingluck had submitted the new list to the King for endorsement.
The changes will be the fifth in her two-year-old government after winning the general election in 2011.
Other changes have not been confirmed with the focus on Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom who, according to several sources, will be replaced by PM's Office Minister Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan, after the rice pledging scheme suffered a huge loss and damagened the popularity of the government.
Mr Chalerm said the change will have no effect on his strong backing for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to return home. "Time changes, but Chalerm's heart does not,'' he told reporters.
