PM downplays coup possibility

The audio clip said to be a conversation between ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Deputy Defence Minister Yutthasak Sasiprapa is unlikely to lead to a military coup, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has said.

"We have to look at what's happening in other countries. I believe nobody wants to do harm to his own country," the premier said on Tuesday.

She maintained that the clip had not been verified by authorities and said that no one could confirm its veracity yet.

Ms Yingluck said the issue had been politicised, which was making it difficult for the government to perform its duties.

She asked the people to differentiate between political wrangling and the day-to-day work of government.

"We in the government have to try our best, within existing limitations. I believe the results of our work will be proof of our intentions," the prime minister said.

On Labour Minister Chalerm Yubamrung's prediction that the political situation would become more violent in the wake of the clip, she said it was normal for political tensions in the country to fluctuate, both on a national and international level.

She pleaded with the people to help government progress into a third year, saying that she would not let what was happening with the clip distract her from her work.
