Korat reds vow not to harass rally

A red-shirt leader in Nakhon Ratchasima on Sunday pledged not to harass the new anti-government group’s planned rally in the province on Monday.

Supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) in this northeastern province would not hold a counter-rally against nor interfere with members of the People's Army against the Thaksin Regime who will gather in Muang district, Anuwat Tinnarat said.

The planned protest is part of the People’s Army’s campaign to hold political rallies in provinces deemed UDD strongholds nationwide.

Mr Anuwat also said he would not mobilise the red shirts from his province to confront the People’s Army’s planned mass gathering on Aug 4 to avoid being used as a tool for political gain by the anti-government groups.

The UDD red shirts would, however, join the UDD’s mass rally planned at Parliament on Aug 1 to show support for the government’s push for an amnesty bill proposed by Pheu Thai MP Worachai Hema, Mr Anuwat added.

The People's Army Against Thaksin Regime comprises several groups such as Pitak Siam and the Thai Patriots Network.

The newly formed anti-government "People's Army" hopes to mobilise at least 30,000 people for a rally in Bangkok when the House resumes on Thursday to deliberate the amnesty bill submitted by Mr Worachai.
