Govt eyes watchdog, judge assets checks

The government is finding legal grounds to force executives of independent organisations to declare their assets and liabilities.

Deputy government spokeswoman Sunisa Lertpakawat said the cabinet yesterday ordered the Council of State to find out if laws regarding asset declarations cover independent organisations and other high-ranking state officials.

If there is no such law, the council will draft one and propose it for the cabinet to consider.

"The order is aimed at promoting transparency and fighting corruption," Ms Sunisa said.

Independent organisations such as the Election Commission, the Constitution Court and the National Anti-Corruption Commission have often been in conflict with previous governments backed by ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
