8 countries warn citizens on Thai travel

Eight countries have issued advisories warning their citizens about travel to Thailand.

Along with these eight countries, the economic zone of Taiwan has also issued a travel advisory, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said yesterday.

The eight countries are Canada, Brazil, Israel, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Austria and Sweden, Mr Surapong said.

Mr Surapong said he would not like the protests to damage the tourist atmosphere in Thailand, especially during the peak tourist season.

"I understand that demonstrating is a constitutional right but I would like the protesters to think of the impacts on the country's image, economy and tourism as well," he said.

He added that he wanted academics, students and other groups protesting against the amnesty bill to understand this was an issue for parliament and it was about to go to the Upper House for further deliberation.

"I would like all parties to calm down and consider this rationally. The Senate will listen to opinions from all sides. All problems can be resolved if we can put aside our emotions and egos," he said.
