Prompong, Jurin spar in censure row

The opposition has vowed to take legal action against House Speaker Somsak Kiatsuranon if he rejects its censure motion against the prime minister and the interior minister.

Opposition chief whip Jurin Laksanavisit said yesterday Mr Somsak wrote to Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and asked to obtain the opposition's impeachment motion against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Interior Minister Charupong Ruangsuwan but the opposition had already decided not to submit the details.

Mr Charupong is also the leader of the ruling Pheu Thai Party.

Mr Somsak said the censure, or no-confidence, motion had to be filed together with the proposed impeachment motion.

Mr Jurin said if Mr Somsak fails to put the opposition's censure motion on the House agenda, the party would pursue a case against him of failing to do his duty under the constitution.

Meanwhile, Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit said that unless the Democrats presented copies of the proposed impeachment motion in detail to Mr Somsak, Pheu Thai would seek the removal of the Democrat MPs for violating Section 158 of the constitution.

The section requires the opposition to file both censure and impeachment motions when it wants to pursue the prime minister for alleged graft and misrule.
